Hope to recap the places ive been. In no particular order.-------------------------------------------------------VISP is in the Canton of Valais. Visp lies in the Rhone valley and has a population of aropund 7700. It is a small place and can be used has a base for day trips to Brig, Zermatt,Andermatt and Montreaux. Bahnhofstrasse is the main street with a wide selection of shops, this is mainly flat, but the historic Visp is up a hill. The railway station is at a junction, serves 2 main lines, and a metre gauge line. The bus station is at the front of train station.--------------------------------------------------------------LOCARNO. I travelled from Visp to Locarno by train crossing a corner of Italy. Left Visp with blue skies ,entered a long tunnel came out to a blizzard of snow. Locarno was under a foot of snow still looked nice place. The Piazza Grande must be the nicest square in Switzerland. Near here is the funicular to Sacro Monte for lovely view. I took a trip by train to Ascona,Bellizonza. and Lugano from here. If it is still on the go, a SwissTravel Pass is a good bargain it can be used on Trains, Buses, and Ferries, with free admission to museums.-----------------------------------------------------SCAFFHAUSEN is near the German border and is a pleasent place, famous forthe Rhine falls, even though the falls are 5km away in Neuhausen. I took a trolley bus to Neuhausen , there are tourist signs to the falls. --There are 16th century water foutains in Scaffhausen centre, very colourful.-- Munot is a circular 16th century fortification on a hill. A trip i took was to Romanshorn in Switzerland and Konstanz Germany on Lake Bodensee.--------------------------------------------------MONTREUX is on Lake Geneva ( Lac Leman ) a resort with grand hotels and a promenade on the lake side. Montreux is famous for its jazz fesival. On the lake side is a statue of Freddy Mercury of group Queen. Chateau Chillon is the most visted attraction. A trip i did by train was to Gstaad.-----------------------------------------------GENEVE is between the Alps and the Jura moutains on Lake Geneve the largest lake in Switzerland. There is a lakeside promenade, parks, and boat trips. In the lake is Jet d Eau a spray of water that shoots into the air. The old town is lovely to walk round. There are 30 museums in Geneve. There is a airport. Trains from allover Switzerland and France.-------------------------------------------------------ZERMATT. I arrived in Zermatt from Bern by SBB standard gauge train to Visp then Metre gauge train to Zermatt. Visp to Zermatt took one hour on the rack track. Zermatt is a petrol car free zone, only electric. Zermatt is a village in the canton of Valais, boardering Italy. Most of Switzerlands highest mountains are around Zermatt including the famous Matterhorn at 4478m. For a close view i took the Gornergrat Bahn in village centre.--There are a couple of streets with wooden buildings, Hinterhof and Lauberweg.-- The Zermatt museum is in the main street. A short trip i took by train was to the lovely little village of St. Niklaus.-------------------------------------------------------CHUR. I used Chur as a base . It is a ideal hub for trip by bus or train.Ideal for the mountain trains like the Bernina Express and the Glacier Express.-- Express is a strange word has they move slowly.--I explored Davos, Klosters,St. Moritz, Arosa and Tirano Italy. A little timetable booklet is available at rail station. The mountain scenery is stunning, you might like to ask about the Swiss Travel Pass.-----------------------------------------------------------------------------BERN .Bern is the federal capital and seat of the Swiss Goverment. Bern has plenty to see. The Clock Tower dates from 15th century is on Kram Gasse. The bear park down by the river is improved. The Old Town down by the river. The Rathaus ( town hall)is on corner of Rathaus Gasse and Post Gasse. The cathedral is in gothic style. The main streets are covered arched walkways, so the shops and cafes are under cover, great when it rains. There are historic water foutains in the middle of the road.-- In Kramgasse is the house Einstein lived in from 1903 to 1905.--- A trip i did was to Lauterbrunnen and Lucerne.----- I stayed in a village of Niederscherli, 17 minutes by regular train from Bern . The Baren Hotel is modern and comfortable. Free coffee / tea machine all day. Ive stayed here on two occasions. The village is small with a Coop store. --------------------------------------------------LUGANO is in a valley between Monte Bre and San Salvatore. Nice streets to wander round. There are freqent buses and trains. Plenty of lovely churches and museums. There are arcaded streets. Ive been twice to Lugano.
